Lupe's Neverland Race Report

Submitted by Lupe Steele @LupeSteele

A year to the day after Sean came up with his goal and mission statement for #Run3rd, I found myself enjoying the ambiance and relishing in the grandiose splendor of Disneyland. Over the past year we have created a movement that has become global, and I’ve created wonderful bonds with those who share the #Run3rd vision. It was only fitting that our movement would be celebrating its one year anniversary at the Happiest Place on Earth. And before you could say “supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” the happy just kept on coming when I learned that Sean Astin, our Captain of Captains, would also be running in the Neverland 5K and the TinkerBell Half Marathon.

Fortuitously, the run was also scheduled on my 38th birthday, which was the reason I initially chose to run the Neverland 5K. My 6 year old son, who enjoys running around in circles and straight lines, would get the chance to take his running show on the road and run alongside his mommy at Disneyland. Not bad for a birthday weekend if I say so myself.

Throughout the week, the #Run3rd community submitted such touching dedications, comments, and wishes. It was an honor to run on behalf of everyone’s contributions. It was a wonderful feeling knowing the whole #Run3rd community has ran hundreds and hundreds of miles to support each other.  A feeling of unity for the causes of others is a touching reminder of our enduring human kindness.

On the one year anniversary of #run3rd

Submitted by Leah Gutierrez @Leahmari11

A year ago, my friend Pam and I stood in our corral waiting for the start of the inaugural Disneyland Tinkerbell Half Marathon. Amidst all the pre-race pep talks I remember the race correspondent interviewing some folks. I heard a familiar voice that stirred a giddiness in me. He talked about why he was running and who he was running for and invited everyone to learn more by following him on Twitter. Everyone around me listened closely trying to understand what was being said, though some didn't quite follow what was going on (perhaps they were distracted by the brisk morning cold). I exclaimed, "That's Sean Astin! This #Run3rd thing he's talking about seems like something we need to find out more about."

I immediately pulled out my phone, got on twitter and hit the follow button for @SeanAstin_LA [now @SeanAstin -Ed.].

That was my re-introduction to Sean Astin and the beginning of #Run3rd. It's been quite a year! Being a #Run3rd Team Captain has taught me so much. I run all my races now with a greater purpose than I initially set out to do. The Captains inspiring each other to do more and be more fills my heart with such great joy. Our amazing #Run3rd community is one that I am honored to be a part of, and watching how it's grown worldwide in just one year has been exciting.

Thank you Sean for the blessing of #Run3rd and for sharing it with all of us.

Happy #Run3rd Anniversary!

One year anniversary of #Run3rd!

One year ago this weekend, Sean Astin came up with the idea of #Run3rd. Since then, he has inspired and encouraged others to take up running and to dedicate their runs to the dreams, hopes, causes and aspirations of others.

Thank you, Sean and all the Team Captains and others who #run3rd!

Allstate Half Marathon race report

Submitted by Heather Stewart @captainstewie
Me, Ditto and Sue  aka “Team Ditto” for the 2013 LA Marathon

As human beings we are constantly growing and changing. In babies and children we see these changes every day: the baby is a little heavier  or your 8 year old is losing baby fat.  But in adults it’s a less noticeable thing. When I started training for my first 5k in November of 2010, if you told me that in a couple of years I would be training for a marathon, I would have laughed in your face for about 30 minutes.

Now, it’s not so funny.

Half Marathons have now become training runs for the 2013 LA Marathon on March 17th. For training I do a “long, easy run” each weekend. A half marathon is the shortest of those long runs. HOLY <insert expletive here>!

Resolution 5K Race Report

Submitted by Sean Astin @SeanAstin

The Resolution 5K on January 5 was… Joy, pure Joy! I loved this event. I love Downtown LA when she puts on her best face. The traffic surrounding the event was stifling, but that just served to heighten the sense of anticipation and fun.

The start line was long, arranged in 15 Corrals. The 1/2 Marathoners were out in force by the thousands. Because of my finishing times I was placed in Corral #3. I felt like a total fraud. Because of my injuries and attendant weight gain (I'm getting in good shape finally) my time was actually going to be really slow—between 10&11 minute miles (I hoped! My actual finish time was 34:08). But, because of #run3rd and all of the PR stuff I get to do (not this night, but others) I felt a little sneaky, like someone let me cut into their lane on the onramp.

Sean Astin's Sandy Hook Virtual 5K race report

Read other Sandy Hook virtual race reports.

While I really wanted this virtual 5K to be a healing gesture and a note of hope—aside from the $20 entrance fee which, wonderfully, will go to the Sandy Hook School Support Fund established officially by the victims' families—it wasn't. I stepped onto my fancy new treadmill, which I've been using to help recover from a bunch of injuries, and I felt nothing. There was just a void. Running is inspiring, it's ennobling and it most certainly has the power to heal. But not that night. Did I mention that I ran it at night? Appropriate.

Sean Astin's Passion for Running: Reprint

Today is the one year anniversary of Sean Astin's first ever interview about his interest in long distance running. It was preparing for this interview that led to him to come up with the concept of Run3rd.

In case you missed it then, here it is again!

~~~
What prompted you to train for this year’s [2012] LA Marathon and what motivates you to keep running?
I love talking about running. I don’t think I’ve given any ‘running centric’ interviews before. So, to your questions. My answers are not linear; in fact, what follows is a spelling error laden [actually not -Ed] stream of consciousness. Good luck sorting through it!
Sandy Hook Virtual 5K race reports
On Saturday, December 29, 2012, most of the Team #Run3rd Captains took part in the Sandy Hook Virtual 5K, one of several running events being held to support the Newtown CT community after the terrible shootings at the Sandy Hook Elementary School.
Sean Astin, Andrea Barber, Christina Boulard, Tony Conticello, Heidi Corrado, Sarah Diamond, Michael Hornsby, Linda Iroff, Laura Lawson, Heather Slawinski, Lupe Steele, Heather Stewart and Cheyanne Witte all participated. Some of us did it a day early (Linda, to avoid impending snow), some a day late (Sarah, after recovering from a bout of vertigo), and when Christina and Cheyanne were unable to run due to sick child and unexpected surgery, respectively, in true Team #run3rd spirit, Heather Stewart added their miles to hers!
Here are reports from some of the captains.
